Types of dark store jobs: picker, packer and rider

• Picker. You walk the aisles with a handheld scanner and collect the items for each order. Blinkit offers 9-hour day or night shifts, with transport and medical insurance.
• Packer. You check the items, bag the order and hand it to a rider. Blinkit hires for picking, packing and sorting through one form.
• Inventory associate. You receive stock from the warehouse, put it on shelves and remove expired products. Expired stock on the shelf is the most common reason food-safety officers act against a store.
• Store manager. You run shifts, stock, hygiene and inspections. No app publishes a manager salary.
• Delivery partner. Riders sign up with the app directly and do not work for the store. You use your own vehicle and get paid per order plus incentives.

A picker’s shift in a dark store

Orders reach the store’s handheld devices the moment a customer pays. You scan each item off the shelf, a packer checks and bags it, and a waiting rider takes it out.

Each order has to be picked and packed within minutes, so the pace is fast. Between orders, staff unload stock, refill shelves and pull out items close to expiry. You will be on your feet for most of the shift.

Dark store salary and rider pay by app

Older company figures, for background only:

• In June 2025 Zepto said delivery partners earn ₹25,000–40,000 a month, with incentives tied to deliveries completed, customer ratings and being on time.
• In June 2025 Swiggy advertised delivery-partner earnings of up to ₹30,000 a month and insurance cover of up to ₹12 lakh.

All of these are company figures. “Up to” amounts include incentives and describe the top earners. Riders pay for their own fuel, phone data and bike repairs out of those earnings, so take-home pay is well below the headline figure.

Riders’ own accounts are well below the adverts. Zepto riders in Hyderabad (May 2025) and Thane (March 2026) said they were paid as little as ₹10–15 an order, and Zepto replied to those claims; both sides are set out under Zepto delivery partner pay.

Cities with the most dark store jobs

Every store needs pickers, packers and riders, so more stores usually means more work. These 30 cities have the most dark stores. The numbers count stores and do not show open vacancies.

Counts cover six apps: Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, BB Now, Flipkart Minutes and Amazon Now. Smaller towns may have one or two stores of a single app. Open your city from the city search to see stores by area.

Documents you need for a dark store job

Blinkit is the one app that publishes its list. Other apps ask for much the same papers.

How to apply for a dark store job

1. Open the company’s own sign-up page, or install its official app from the Play Store. Check the developer name before you install.
2. Keep your documents ready. Riders need a driving licence, RC and vehicle insurance. Store staff do not.
3. Finish the background check and training the app asks for.
4. If you deliver, register on e-Shram as a gig worker once you start. It is free and links you to government schemes.

Questions to ask before you join

Some dark stores are run by partner companies, so your employer may not be the app itself. Ask these questions before your first shift:

• Who is my employer: the app’s company, a store partner or an agency?
• Is the advertised salary my fixed monthly pay, or does it include overtime and incentives?
• Will PF and ESIC be deducted, and will I get a payslip every month?
• How many hours is a shift, how many weekly offs do I get, and is night-shift transport provided?
• For riders: what is the pay per order, what are the incentive targets, and what happens to my ID if my rating drops?

How to spot a fake dark store job offer

• Real sign-up pages sit on the company’s own domain, such as blinkit.com. Names like “zeptojobs” or “blinkit-careers” on other domains belong to someone else.
• A “registration”, “uniform”, “ID card” or “security deposit” fee paid to a person or a personal UPI ID is a red flag.
• An offer made only over WhatsApp or a phone call, with no company email or app login, is fake.
• Never share an OTP. No genuine recruiter needs your bank or Aadhaar OTP.

Courts have already acted against fake job sites:

• On 26 August 2025 the Delhi High Court ordered fake Zepto job and franchise sites, such as zeptojob.com and zeptojobs.in, to be taken down. Banks had to freeze the linked accounts, and the phone numbers used were blocked.

Rider rights

Since 21 November 2025 the Code on Social Security treats delivery partners as gig and platform workers, and you can register on e-Shram with Aadhaar. Karnataka and Telangana also require notice and written reasons before a platform ends your contract.
