Quick commerce in India: facts for students

Updated October 2026

Quick commerce in India means ordering groceries and daily needs on an app and getting them in about 10–30 minutes from a nearby dark store. The market was worth about US$13 billion in FY26, and there are 8,241 dark stores across six apps in 498 cities. JioMart also delivers from 2,613 Reliance Stores.

Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart are the three biggest apps. Blinkit alone runs 2,621 of the dark stores.

How quick commerce works

Staff at the dark store nearest your address pick and pack the order in minutes, and a rider waiting at the store brings it in 10–30 minutes. Mother hubs restock each cluster of stores. Apps earn from the margin or commission on goods, fees and brand advertising, while rent, staff and riders take most of it.

Problems with quick commerce in India: gig workers, kiranas and food safety

IssueIn brief
Gig workersPay transparency, ID blocking, insurance and road safety. The Code on Social Security covers them from Nov 2025, and five states have their own laws; Karnataka’s is being challenged in court.
Kirana storesDistributors claim mass closures. Kiranas still sell most of India’s groceries, and the pressure is mostly in the metros.
Competition lawA distributors’ complaint alleges predatory pricing and deep discounting; the CCI ran a preliminary inquiry in 2025.
FDI and inventoryForeign-owned firms cannot sell their own stock online, so Eternal and Swiggy capped foreign ownership at 49.5%.
Consumer protectionThe CCPA has acted against dark patterns such as drip pricing; extra fees (handling, small-cart, surge) are a common complaint.
Food safetyState FDAs have suspended licences and sealed warehouses over hygiene and expired stock (2025–26).
SaturationIn July 2026, metros had about 4,300 dark stores against about 3,600 that can be run profitably.
